What does ‘human-grade’ actually mean?
It means the ingredients meet the same standards required for food made for people, not just the minimum allowed for pet food. Most dog food uses feed-grade ingredients, which have far lower standards for sourcing, handling, and processing. Human-grade means every ingredient could legally be used in food you’d eat yourself.
Where does the meat actually come from?
Our proteins are sourced from the same farms that supply ButcherBox for human meals: grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and humanely raised pork. We’ve spent a decade building relationships with these farms. We know the names. We can trace every protein back to its source. That’s not something most pet food companies can say.
What does ‘grass-fed’ and ‘humanely raised’ mean in practice?
Grass-fed cattle are raised on pasture and fed a natural grass diet, not grain-finished in feedlots. Humanely raised means the animals are given space to move, are not kept in confined conditions, and are not given unnecessary antibiotics or added hormones. These aren’t just marketing terms for us. They’re standards we’ve held to for our human products for over a decade.
Why does cooking temperature matter?
Most commercial dog food, including a lot of fresh food, is cooked at 250°F or higher. High heat destroys amino acids, vitamins, and natural flavour compounds. We cook at 165°F using a sous-vide method, which preserves more of what makes the food nutritious and palatable. Your dog gets more from every bite.
What is AAFCO complete and balanced?
AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) sets the nutritional standards for pet food in the US. Complete and balanced means the food meets all of your dog’s daily nutritional requirements on its own, with nothing else needed. Our recipes are vet-formulated and tested to meet these standards for all life stages.
